It’s been almost three weeks since Robert arrived — and let me tell you, things are finally starting to move fast!
Together, we’ve walked the property, inspected all the existing structures, and roughly outlined our priorities. Our plan is to live in the main house, which will later be turned into the eco-lodge, and rent out the other units while we’re working on the approval for rezoning and subdivision.
So here’s what we’re currently working on:
Make the Main House Comfortable
That includes:
- Fixing the plumbing, one geyser, and two en-suite bathrooms. Both need showers installed, and one toilet/bidet needs fixing. (Done)
- Repairing the kitchen sink, tap, and drain. (Done)
- Painting the bedrooms. (Two done)
- Getting basic furniture and appliances. (In progress)
Renovate Two Additional Houses
We started with the two-unit house just below the main house. Unfortunately, the roof required waterproofing first (Done) — so we had to tackle that before starting on the interiors.
What Else We’re Tackling
- Purchase our bakkie / pickup truck
- Prepare a solid application for subdivision and partial rezoning of the property
- All sorts of administrative and internal paperwork that nearly made our heads explode
Day-to-Day Progress
There are, of course, many subtopics and overlapping issues hidden within all that — so there’s plenty to keep us busy. But progress is steady and visible every day.
Our main expenses so far? Countless trips to builders’ merchants and hardware stores for materials, tools, and proper work gear. And yes — we’re definitely having fun with our newly acquired power tools!
Main Goal for the Coming Month
Finish renovating the two rental houses before Thomas has to travel back in early December. It’s a tough deadline, but we’re feeling positive and determined to make it happen!
We can’t wait to share more – Stay tuned for our next newsletter around the beginning of December.
